The Southern Stone County Fire Protection District has labelled the tragedy, which took place on a Ride The Ducks boat, a “mass casualty”.

“Seven patients [are in] the hospital and we do have some people still missing. So this is going to be an all night, into tomorrow [search],” Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader told reporters about 9.30pm.

Of the seven people injured, two are in critical condition. At about midnight, Rader confirmed some of the dead and injured were children, and five people were still missing.

While the identities of those killed have not yet been released, it was confirmed that there were children on board at the time. He added he believed all those who died did so by drowning.
