Soldier Sentenced To 40 Years In Prison Over Murder

The soldier accused of shooting dead three people in Gulu Town, Uganda has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The sentence to L/cpl Geoffrey Odaga, attached to the 4th Division Army Headquarters in Gulu District, was handed out on Saturday morning by Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, the General Court Martial chairperson, during a sitting at Gulu District headquarters.

Gen Gutti sentenced the convict to 40 years in prison on three counts of murder, 40 years in prison on aggravated robbery and 20 years imprisonment on attempted robbery, adding that the sentences will run concurrently.

Court heard that on August 4, at about 11:30p.m, L/cpl Odaga, a serving UPDF soldier, with malice caused death of Denis Richard Ochen, Fred Yasin and Sunday Wokorach Ouma at Smiling Panda 2 bar located in Kabedo Opong Village, Bardege Division in Gulu District.

Prosecution also contends that the soldier attempted to unlawfully cause the death of Jimmy Ojok and committed aggravated robbery by stealing four bottles of Senator Beer and Shs61,500.

Gen Gutti noted that court will subtract six days from 40 years to the 39 years and 359 days since the suspect had already spent six days on remand from August 5 when he was arrested.

The convict will serve his sentence at Gulu Central Government Prison.
