Police have arrested two suspects, who specialised in smashing vehicles’ windscreens with hammers on Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos State, before robbing them.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrest, identified the suspects as Akpan Samuel and Ani Chukwuma. Oti said the suspects were arrested on October 29, by operatives of Maroko Police Station led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mr. Issah Abdumajid, on Marwa Bridge on Lekki- Epe Expressway.
The police image maker explained that the suspects always positioned themselves in the traffic in order to rob their targets. Describing their modus operandi, Oti said that the gang members used to hurl stones at oncoming vehicles, thereby smashing their windscreens. According to him, the action naturally compels the shocked driver to halt. Once the driver stops, the gang would rob the victims of their valuables. Oti said:
“They smash windscreens of vehicles whose drivers refuse to roll down their glasses when commanded to do so. The hammer and an improvised pistol that appears like a perfect prototype of a Berretta pistol were recovered from them. The activities of the robbers had been a source of concern to the command thus the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, directed the DPO to mobilise all assets at his disposal to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums.”
The suspects were said to have been charged to Igbosere Magistrate’s Court 10 on November 1. They were later remanded in Ikoyi Prison. Edgal, however, promised members of the public that the activities of the criminals would soon be a thing of the past as the command had increased surveillance on all routes with heavy traffic across the state.
